Rene Cloukey

The Cloukey Sports Report on Channel X begins Monday September 29th on the Channel X Morning Show.

For nearly five decades, Rene Cloukey has been the voice of local sports in Aroostook County. His love for the game started early, by fifth grade, he already dreamed of becoming the Boston Red Sox radio announcer.

A 1975 graduate of Ashland High School, Cloukey went on to study at Northeast Broadcasting School in Boston before launching his career at WSJR/WLVC radio in Madawaska. He later worked at WDHP and WFST, before joining WAGM-TV in 1984 as Sports Director. For the next 41 years, Cloukey delivered unmatched coverage of local athletics, earning a reputation for providing “the best local sports coverage in the state.”

Beyond the press box and broadcast booth, Cloukey has been deeply committed to his community. For 35 years, he organized the Cloukey Challenge Golf Tournament, raising more than $150,000 for Special Olympics. His dedication earned him the prestigious Special Olympics International Heroes Award.

Throughout his career, Cloukey has received some of the highest honors in broadcasting and sports journalism. He is a six-time recipient of the Maine Sportscaster of the Year Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He was honored with the Suzanne Goucher Lifetime Achievement Award by the Maine Association of Broadcasters and was inducted into the MAB Hall of Fame in 2023. He has also received the Red Powell Award from the University of Maine at Fort Kent Hall of Fame, the Media Person of the Year Award from the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches, and two Media Awards from the Maine Athletics Administrators Association. The Maine Principals’ Association recognized him with induction into its Hall of Excellence, and his alma mater honored him as part of the inaugural Ashland High School Career Wall of Fame.

From radio to television, from the sidelines to the community, Rene Cloukey’s career stands as a testament to passion, dedication, and the power of local sports to bring people together.
